Our Story
'Typing' and 'Leadership', if you find it hard to see a connection between these two words, hear me out. It started when my boys were asked to bring Chromebooks to school in their 4th grade. Any parent who knows about the effects of screen time on kids would be cautious about this. However, for kids in this generation, it was a matter of time and I had to embrace it or even more, I thought, 'why not make it better?' I decided to give them a head start - I asked them to practice typing for ten minutes every morning before school. Initially, they found it challenging and even frustrating at times -those ten minutes might seem insignificant, but there were times when they detested it more than any other part of their day. Yet, it gave way to progress, and occasionally they even bragged about how fast they could type. Before long, they were typing faster than me, a full-time computer user.
The one obvious benefit they saw was to express their ideas more easily as they eliminated a barrier between idea generation and expression. This allowed them to pour their ideas onto the screen fearlessly when they needed to. Their writing scores on computer-based exams improved significantly.
Another unmeasured benefit was the exposure to diverse reading materials during their typing practice. This exposure enriched their vocabulary, spelling, and general knowledge.
Moreover, they are reminded every day as they type that discipline pays off and consistency matters. The peak of the ripple effect was that their newfound skill did not go unnoticed. Their proficiency in typing led them to assume the role of the scribe, which positioned them as leaders in the process of gathering opinions and facilitating discussions during their group projects. They summarized and rephrased ideas, cross-checked understandings, and encouraged more input as they were typing into their workbooks. The pride and confidence in their voices when they shared this with me were... priceless.
